Something that may have worked on the sign is rubbing alcohol, or cheap vodka. Alcohol is a pretty useful solvent against Sharpie pens.
Huh, I actually took a few packaged alcohol swabs with me to add to the first aid kit, since there didn't seem to be anything in there to clean a cut with. Shoulda tried one on the sign. Or maybe I'll just stash a bottle of vodka in the box. Beside the tequila.
